Wednesday, September 28, 2005 flying saucers (for lack of a better title) I finally finished my business cards and had them printed. Melikes. Too bad I'm too swamped with other stuff to pursue work right now. It's Reed's birthday and I'm totally gonna send him some boobs. I'm not sure which ones he'd like best, so I'll just have to use my own judgement on this one. My ten year high school reunion is coming up and it seems like people are vaguely excited about it. Most of us didn't give a shit when the 5 year came around (like me), but I suppose 10 is significantly more significant. I can't pinpoint exactly why I'm going, but I imagine it will be at least vaguely interesting. Worst case scenario is that I show up with the people I'm still in contact with and we spend most of the evening making fun of everyone else. Or is that the best case scenario? I like stats. Monday, September 19, 2005 beavers build damns In planetary events, the word on the street is that with the planetary shifts coming up soon, "Decisive community moves will be made to change things. To add to this upheaval, Jupiter in intense Scorpio squares Saturn in Leo at the end of the year. The last time of a major Jupiter/Saturn square was the 1986 explosion at Chernobyl and the subsequent nuclear fallout. Then too, Jupiter was in Water and Saturn in a Fire sign." In etymological events, the English translation of the Latin word 'vagina' is 'in a scabbard' where a scabbard is defined as 'a sheath for a sword'. Now I have a new camera. It's nice and pretty and shiny. It is also a Canon, this time 4.0 megapixel (I don't see a need for more. tell me if there's something I'm overlooking in that assessment) and with 3x optical zoom (yay!). And up to 10x digital zoom, but fuck that. The digital zoom sucks ass and any magnification it provides is better off done in photoshop. Holy shit, time moves quickly and we're getting old. Exactly 30 years ago today David Bowie scored his first #1 hit with 'Fame'. Thursday, September 15, 2005 substances How picky are we about the quality of our virgin olive oil? Some of us are picky because we want good taste and texture. Older people less so, it seems. I have had no more than one cigarette per day for a week now (except for yesterday when I went to a bar with a yard with Amanda and smoked 3) and I feel better (physically) already. Dad's emphysema is a fabulous motivating factor, and I should probably take more responsibility for my health as I get older anyway. I already eat mostly good things and move around a lot. I do not work out and I am not going to start. I am also not going to get fat. Never ever. It's hard for me to remember to take vitamins. Kate Moss, caught. licks, schticks and parlor tricks during the lazy, hazy and dazey One thing I've never been good at (never put any effort towards) is having a public persona/social schtick/anecdotes on hand to please business contacts or people I've just met at cocktail parties. It's just not the way I am. I recognize the value of such behavior, like for personal or business PR or as a helpful measure for the socially insecure, but it's rather sickening when it bleeds into all relations, from conversations with people considered friends to the dude who sells newspapers. It's okay to not be liked by everybody. Very okay. I can name a few people who semi-regularly contact me who talk and share things about themselves but know almost nothing about me, as though hearing is not part of their lives. I wonder if they know who they are. I think they're all men. I'm so amused that Colin is taking one of Rusty's courses. Welcome back to the NOLA refugee. Wednesday, September 07, 2005 PS: Also, I recently realized that my camera was stolen too. presents, presence and creepy things I love that the oppressively high temperatures and humidity levels have given us a break. Now I can wear what I want and not whatever allows the most air to my flesh, and I no longer want to rip my hair out or shave my head. I also feel healthier and sleep better. Amanda's birthday was on Sunday and it was nice. Lillie's has a nice yard and I ate pork loins. Dancing and taking pics with Kool Keith last week at the Ultramagnetic MCs show was mega fun. Pics of both of these things are on flickr. At this point dad's still quite unwell, and we still know of nothing that will provide relief, promise or solution. It's all quite depressing and consuming. Yesterday my fall classes started. In the first session of my ethics class yesterday I couldn't help but feel disgust at the opinions of some of my classmates. Worst were those who claimed that ethically one must save a life, even if it means the potential perish of many other lives, because 'god' or some similarly indoctrinated version of "morality" dictates that any life must be preserved at any cost. I responded that the good of the many outweighs the good of the few, and that the most selfish thing a person can do is to put one's own, illogically justified beliefs, above the good of the many. Unfortunately, the people that hold such beliefs and opinions are also the ones with like to act like they are holier than thou, which makes it even worse. Some of my own personal notes from class: -morality is highly contextual. That for which there is no basic justification is what is truly immoral. -morality is the measure of how much your actions adhere to your (or the prevailing) values. -the measure of success within a capitalist society is largely contrary to most principles of ethics. Under capitalism, profit is the highest value. -putting own beliefs of right and wrong above progress/benefits of the many is the most selfish thing a person can do. Many are socialized to believe otherwise. This morning I noticed that my ATM card, my Visa card, and all of the cash was missing from my wallet. Everything else was intact. I know I had cash when I bought coffee around 7:30pm last night. I know I had my ATM card when I bought a metrocard and withdrew some cash yesterday afternoon. All I did since was to ride the subway home at a reasonable hour, reading, with my bag on my lap, and sleep. It's baffling how someone could have gotten access to my wallet to remove select items and then returned it to it's proper place. My best theory on what happened is both really creepy and seemingly implausible.
