things that go bump in the night
the party last night and all the music that came with it was tons of fun. Unfortunately, I was too preoccupied last week to promote it so most of my peeps were not in attendance. Sorry. The second band that performed was called Barra Libre and I say everyone should go out and see them. Now. Like a mix of The Clash and Sublime with a bit of Cake and Mighty Mighty Bosstones mixed in, and half in spanish (and more innovative). As for me, I've been on a major music high lately, mixing effortlessly, my intuition at an all time high. Of primo wonderfulness is the mix I played of Air's "Don't Be Light" mixed with "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath. It's as though these 2 were made to go together, a powerfully synchronistic and eerie combination (underscored by the latter of the two being one of my very favorite songs from what I have recently come to realize is one of my very favorite albums ever ever) and totally Halloween appropriate. Props to Danny and the rest of BTM for the best of their parties (that I've been at) yet and, as always, they were awesome.

macromedia needs a spanking
first off, my flash class is held in a windows computer lab. Aside from any issues with macromedia, this is a grave error on the part of nyu. What flash developer doesn't work on a mac? Ugh.
So then I find out that when developing flash content, one must stick with the same platform the whole time. This means that I can't take my unfinished and uncompiled flash movie home from class to work on because my mac wont open it (even though I have both Flash 5 and Flash MX). Looking through my stuff, I am reminded that in addition to 5 and MX for Mac, somewhere along the way I acquired a copy of Flash MX for Windows. I get Rah's permission to use his computer for this, clear all sorts of hard drive space on his drive, and install. And it still wont open my file!!!! 2 computers, 3 versions of flash, and I can't open my goddamn file. This trumps all cross-compatibility issues I've come across before. Absolutely ridiculous. I'm gonna go slit my wrists now. The gushing blood will add a Halloweeney element to my outfit for tonight.

pimps need love too
I've always found Halloween costumes to be more stressful than fun.
I get creeped out by people in masks.
If it is as they say and the eyes are windows to the soul (and the whole face in general, I think), then the creepy factor of someone in a mask is the perceived absence of the soul.
I would like to have some fangs, though.
Pamela put her election ballot butterfly wings on me while stepping out for a moment. That was sort of fun for a minute.
Merry makes great food.

caleb
he's totally amazing.
and he's beautiful, not all weird looking like newborns often are.

And they listened to the birthing mix CD that Amanda asked me to make her over and over again and loved it and Caleb was born during Luna's cover of Season of the Witch.

He was born!
Caleb Russell Soria.
7lbs. 12oz.
so exciting, my bestest friend of 13 years creating new life.
It could have been just yesterday that we were 15 years old, meeting for the first time.
Wow.
I love everyone.

delightful swine
I've been dreaming of pork. Seriously.
And unfortunately, not the greatest varieties of pork either.
Ham and american cheese sandwiches on white bread.
American cheese is the satan of cheeses (if it's even really cheese) and I don't really like ham. I can enjoy pork but don't seek it out, only eat it when it's in front of me. Today I bought some turkey bacon. I also bought an endearingly lopsided pumpkin. I should be working more on my paper right now but Omen II (Damien) is on.

notes
subtext: I need less theoretical material

some notes I wrote in the margin of my class notes. of course, due to the quick and reactive nature in which these thoughts were scrawled they are spotty and incomplete, but what the hell.

anti-nepotism? should people not help their friends and family?

capitalism taken to the fullest/furthest enables hegemony. people whine about hegemonious nature of current media industry. do they want to live in a communist state?

1st amendment taken to extreme is chaos/anarchy. everyone yelling at once.

besides the political party system, if strong lines are drawn/identities formed for media, etc. in terms of left wing/right wing, conservative/liberal, people will not be happy to have something that speaks to their beliefs, but rather will then argue about what;s conservative and what's liberal.

dumbest people, strongest/most rigid opinions.

tis not yet the season
Crazy as it sounds, I've been looking foward to Christmas for awhile now. Each time the temperature drops this visceral response occurs inside me which conjures up delicious images of pine trees, gift wrapping, all the Christmas songs, and chesnuts roasting on an open fire. And I can bust out my 45 of the disco version of the Little Drummer Boy. The day itself doesn't excite me so much as the energy leading up to it (sans the rampant consumerism). This year I'm getting a Christmas tree. Being able to see the one in the lobby of my building out the window is no longer enough. I need the scent of the pine needles in my immediate surroundings.

yawn
Not only am I sleeping much deeper and later than usual, but I've been waking up surly and disoriented. Of course, this doesn't last long. A few sips of coffee and/or a song off the Fred Neil album and I'm a go go. But this morning, the cable modem connection was down, requiring a call to tech support, the timing of which pissed me off. First thing in the morning is not the time I'm in the mood to crawl behind furniture in my pink ghetto-fabulous velour sleep pants making sure that all of the wire connections are intact. But obviously it's back up now. Grrr.

Basta Pasta last night was yummy. I'd highly recommend.

somnambulism and other people's children
I've been inordinately exhausted for the past week or so. I must be more awake and productive.

Happy Birthday Rahmin.

Maybe Amanda will have her baby today and it will share this birthday. That'd be cute.
In any case, the baby is scheduled to add to the tidal wave of birthdays this time of year.

my upstairs neighbors Jessica and Paulus (aka my only real friends in the building at this point) are moving to san jose. Everyone at their going away party had kids except me and R. Other people's kids are cute.
The other pics are of us acting like kids (and the graffiti calling us on it) save for the one of me enjoying the cool bathroom wall and mirror at Lucky Cat.

stoned phallacy for youngsters
Going from home to the nearest bank means walking in the not so good direction where there are only 2 lunch options I consider semi-viable: chicken gyro from man on the street, or burger king. Yesterday I opted for burger king and while waiting I was checking out the toys they're enticing the kiddies with these days.

Besides looking like a dildo with stoned eyes, this one is battery operated and when you turn him on his head glows and rotates. Yeah.

And FYI: the chicken whopper is a let-down. No yummy sauce or pickles.

day planner
It seems I need a day planner. I'm going to buy one today. The mundane things are falling through the cracks. There are too many of them to focus on. It's unlike me to not be able to stay on top of it all with the power of my mind alone. I've been sleeping much later in the mornings.

setbacks and instinct
The web hosting company used by the Tutu Foundation has gone MIA, into the night, no forwarding info. Meanwhile my clients' site and email have been down for over 5 days now but there's nothing I can do about it for the time being. It seems that some socialite woman who used to work for them but left on bad terms and moved to the west coast had the domain registered in her own name and so, until we get a signature and some other stuff from her providing us official permission to use it, our hands are tied. So frustrating. I should have moved them to a hosting company of my preference upon launch as it originally occurred to me to do.

I will always go with my first instinct from now on because it has proven to be most correct and valuable time and time again. Just ask anyone who's played Trivial Pursuit with me at sunrise.

Conservative Ignorance Powerful Enough to Kill Superman
Christopher Reeve died on Saturday, his death coming a mere one day after the presidential debate where Kerry used him as an example of why stem cell research should be supported. Of course the Bush team is against stem cell research (which could potentially have saved Reeves' life) and, as we all know, only awful awful people contribute to the demise of Superman.

Be afraid!
"By an amazing stroke of luck, there have been no vacancies on the Court in Bush's first term. Still, the current Court has been sitting for ten years, and the only Justice under 65 is Clarence Thomas. How much longer can God--who is obviously not a Republican--keep these spry oldsters going? Justice Stevens, the liberal stalwart, is 84! The next President will probably get one, two or even three nominations, and Bush has said he wants more Justices in the Scalia/Thomas mold."

narrow
the way I see it, every concept or notion has 3 angles from which it can be thought about or discussed:
(1)simply as what it is in it's present manifestation (surface, direct and non-abstract);

(2)it's origin, i.e. from where did it originate, why, and what are the implications and conclusions which result from the answers to those questions? (it's derivation and the associated issues);

(3)it's larger role and potential future (assessment of it's current impact, projection of future evolution and impact and how it fits into the larger picture).

Sort of a past, present, future thing, but deeper.
That said, I am so sick of #1. It results in a lot of whining and not a lot of creative or pragmatic thinking. That's the only way a lot of people seem capable of approaching things and it's frustrating. Especially when my mind is racing in a million really interesting directions that I know are not worth sharing in the moment with the people of the moment and so will only remain in my head, likely to be pushed out by new thoughts and eternally lost.

Another thing I'd like to bitch about right now is humorless people: those people who don't really react to things that are funny and don't seem to see any humor in things except in the dryest way possible which produces an uncomfortable little smile. How do they have fun?

"baby baby baby baby oh baby"
Katy (and Phil) had a baby yesterday.
It's a boy with 10 fingers and 10 toes but no name yet.
Since then I've learned that getting to Aspen is either very expensive or very convoluted. I get to take my pick.

8 friends, 2 microphones

My favorite karaoke song to sing is 'Superstar' by The Carpenters but I sing it like Sonic Youth's version because I don't like The Carpenters.
more photo later.

Almost done redesigning this blog. It was initially designed with an intentionally garish aesthetic to match the intended tone (or lack thereof), but things change.

stuff

#1 and #2: Where the MTA is putting their dollars.
#3: Sherry is living next door to what is probably one of the only frat houses in brooklyn. Her house has a nice garden. Her upstairs neighbor has chihuahuas or some similar dogs which are just as silly and frantic.
#4: I draw in class.
