the artist formerly known as...
I'm thinking of this lemon with the lightening bolt as my logo. What do y'all think? I created it as part of the disc art for my blackcrack mix but I think this particular element has more longevity than just part of CD cover art.

I'm a moderate (or perhaps an extremist)
I think moderate weather like today is my favorite: in the 50's, some sun but not too much. Also, this is the time of year when we've been deprived of lush, breathing, trees and plants for so long and even the slightest hint of life on the ground or in the trees is an oasis in the desert.

The dentist cancelled this morning so I went to Shorty's and got a haircut instead where we ended up having a long conversation about the slowly but surely increasing hipness of our shared neighborhood and made promises to play video games together sometime.

feel the burn
I don't believe in calculated exercise (The notion of going to the gym gives me the willies. I'd rather be active by doing things like building, cleaning, fixing, carrying, etc...) but I believe firmly in constant stretching.

So, I discovered the stretch of all stretches which I've been playing with a little but today I got more intense with it. After a minute of it I was sweaty and needed to lay down for a minute:
sit with your legs spread as far apart as they can comfortably stay. Then, raise your arms above your head, clasping one hand around the fingers of the other, reaching for the stars (straight up) as much as you can, keeping your arms as straight as possible. Hold it for as long as you can. It's difficult to remain in this position, but I focused on a vantage point in the distance for the count of 60. Whoa.

Afterwards my shoulders and lower back are notably straighter and stronger.

the stars
These pics of Amanda and I are from 2 (or was it 3) summers ago, the night we went to Whitney's birthday thing at (I think it was) 7A and then started driving up to New Paltz to Mike's country house but got a flat tire at the 125th street exit of the West Side Highway and Amanda was terrified that a crazy person was going to jump out of the bushes and murder us all but instead of getting killed by a crazy, we ended up going to some ghetto service station in the Bronx late at night where they only spoke Spanish and Amanda got the best sandwich of her life out the side of a van that also contained pickled pigs feet and nasty stuff like that.

On Friday, while searching my desk for the copy of my birth certificate that I know I have somewhere, I found 2 copies of my astrological chart in different places. I hadn't read it in years but I saw finding 2 copies as some sort of omen and I read it. Wow, it's so accurate. Then I was talking to Sherry about it and I did her chart.

I have the same Sun and Moon (both) as the following people (a 1 in 144 chance):
Madeline Albright
Bing Crosby
Kirsten Dunst
Carmen Electra
Queen Elizabeth II
Brian Eno
Mother Jones
Lance Bass
Willem deKoonig
Eva Peron
Barbara Streisand
Renee Zellweger

and now, some pics...

the other day Jonica emailed me asking for a particular photo of her from last summer so, in order to find it, I had to go through all sorts of last-summer photos, including this most fabulous photo of Reed:

Last summer I taught Jade how to bowl without the kiddie bumpers on the side of the lanes.

multiple people have said that I need to post a "now" photo of Courtney and I to provide proper contrast to those childhood photos I posted recently so here.

inbetween words of wisdom
I used no post-production on my BCA (black crack association) mix and since then I've been trying to come to terms with the fact that, with no post-production, it will never be 100% perfect. Speaking to Josh about the plight of making DJ mixes, he had the best, most well-phrased thing to say about it:
that's what's nice about mixes -- they're volatile... whereas production work is made up of little parts that are only virtually alive by the reanimation of its parts as a whole -- like frankenstein
brilliant.

this is actually merangue (just really old merangue). And they put it in he window of this bakery as if it is meant to entice customers?

scramblin for dollars
I have some work. I'm making money. Unfortunately this is one of those times when a zillion extra expenses pop up (IRS, accountant, window security gate, dental work), making me feel uneasy. I'll be posting some pics up later. It's not like I'm going to ramble on about this crap.

you've reached the dark side
After a week of agony, I finally finished recording my BCA mix (black crack association... record collectors... we're all swapping DJ mix CDs). It is very dark and more electro than what I usually play and does not contain much of the material I originally thought I would use but I think this is for the best. This whole exercise has taught me that I am so much better playing live/on-the-fly/responding to the energy of the crowd than producing a cohesive mix. But I'm getting better at it now; my mix asks for no post-production.

Pianos and sardines
The crowd at Pianos sucks and they pack 'em in like sardines but there are also many good things about the venue...
like that DJ Gerald McBoingBoing spins there
AND
it's the new home of our psych/mod/garage party
AND
they're about to get a cabaret liscence!!!!!

I noticed the suckage of the crowd on other occasions... picking up on details this time around... lots of girls decked out in their Saturday night best (many off-the-shoulder or low-cut designer shirts with expensive jeans)... style by the book... all money, no personality... but despite all the gals, things tended towards the sausage factory side of things... but we'll rock 'em anyway.

Robbie (McBoingBoing) rocked it. I was very impressed.

(scrunching and wiggling by) Hello, I don't know you. I was just trying to get back from the bathroom. Help, I can't breathe.

bobby digital vs. robbie analog
Trying to avoid the computer for awhile today but it's useless. I envy the people who are able to remain on the more analog side of things.
I drank tea and started reading Wind-up Bird again (finally got it back from Sherry yesterday... I never read books twice but this one is too amazing not to... and speaking of Sherry, Sherry's Google results have gone up exponentially lately) and then I put on the leather pants Amanda got me for Christmas (2 years ago?) trying to break them in a little more and my old green New Balance sneakers and went to do the laundry. I hope I can still wear such things when I'm older without looking like a silly older lady trying to hang onto her youth but I think it'll be allright as my mom was able to retain her girlish figure for a long long time and she still doesn't really have wrinkles. And then a call from a client got me back on the computer which is probably for the best anyway because I have work to do. Blah.

no hope
I just finished watching the Life Inside Angola Prison documentary and I am overcome with sadness. The worst part of it all is not the death, it's the injustice. Despite the guy who's story is followed until his execution or the guy who we see deteriorate and then die of cancer inside the prison, the most outrageous part was when one of the inmates, a very level-headed and honest-seeming guy, approached the appeal board with multiple pieces of information which should have proved that his initial trial was unfair. It seemed in the bag that his case would at least have a chance to be tried properly, yet as soon as he left the room so that the appeal board could deliberate, all the white, southern, fat-headed men on the board were all in instant agreement about his guilt. What gives?

I am already depressed... I've had no appetite for about a week now and I have been having trouble focusing for longer than that... probably not the best condition in which to watch a movie like this but then again, my situation looks great in comparison.

Then, ironically, I put on Fats Wallers' "Louisiana Fairytale". Fats will always cheer me up.

Christ rocks
I am listening to my copy of the double live Spiritualized album and an once again amazed that this is Christian rock. Although they mention Jesus and other such things in the lyrics, it's somehow not in a bothersome way and the raw energy that is conveyed through their music might be closer to god than most of the bible.

Amanda was so right: I've been using that Dr. Haushka nail oil for a mere 2 days now and my nails are crazy strong. Next week I'll be opening beer bottles with them.

And now, some pics.

this group shot looks like we're some sucky band posing for a promo photo

I'm still not done retouching/airbrushing/color-correcting the photo of me and Courtney that I had to dig up from my parents' house but I came across this one that Courtney's mom found that he sent me awhile ago. It's probably obvious that I'm the one on the front left. Courtney is the cute little boy sitting next to me.

I have to think of a title for this one

digging at The Thing on Friday, I came prepared with hand-washing materials to make my hands white again after the experience. After crawling around to check out the bottom shelves and heave-ho-ing some crates to get to the good digs, I got some decent stuff.

I'm not a birthday cake kinda girl but it seems to have turned into tradition for me to post pics of birthday people with their cakes here.

During dinner on Saturday night we talked about all sorts of fascinating and politically correct issues. My dad thinks that there should be a better derogatory term for the terrorist variety of Muslims (he's NOT against all Muslims). He thinks Sand N*gger is too derivative.

the favorites but not all
yesterday I got a particular brand of music itch and went through a few hours of listening to many of my favorite familiar albums which never fail to satisfy me. These are certainly some of my very favorites but not necessarily all of them. There are time-periods where I'll listen to the same album over and over again and then get sick of it and later it doesn't excite me the way it used to. This is a list of the ones that continue to be exciting, inciting, flavorful and impressive time and time again.

In no particular order (artist/title):
) Pulp- This is Hardcore
) Talking Heads- '77
) The Replacements- Let it Be
) John Frusciante- Niandra Lades and Usually just a T-Shirt
) Syd Barrett- The Madcap Laughs
) The Oblivians- ...Play Nine Songs with Quintron
) David Bowie- Hunky Dorey
) Guns and Roses- Appetite for Destruction
) Beastie Boys- Paul's Boutique
) T. Rex- The Slider
) Air- 10,000Hz Legend (and possibly Premeires Symptomes also)
) Beach Boys- Smiley Smile
) VA- Kinky Beats (Lacerba compilation)
) Fantastic Plastic Machine- Fantastic Plastic Machine
) Hot Hot Heat- Knock Knock Knock EP
) Television- Marquee Moon
) Pavement- (Slanted & Enchanted; Terror Twilight; Crooked Rain)
) The Specials- s/t
) Jesus Christ Superstar (orig cast album)

wrong neck
so, apparently, the Brontosaurus (a dino who's former existence I had grown so accustomed to), never existed. Supposedly those brilliant dinosaur bone reconstructors (who does that? I think the archeologists only dig them up, not put them together. maybe it's the paleontologists.) got it wrong, attaching the wrong neck to the rest of the body. The Brontosaurus' thinner-necked and smaller-headed cousin, the Bracheosaurus, was the one that actually existed. I always thought their physical similarities were suspect but the Bronto is the one that always looked right to me. The Bracheo's head always looked way too small for that big body.

...and you thought your job was painstaking
In my Organizational Behavior textbook: Data storage giant EMC has paid Insight Development Group about $625,000 over the past 6 years to have more than 5,000 new hires walk across 1,500-degree coals. This is but one of many so-called experiential motivators that include sky diving and rock climbing. Once employees face such fear, the theory goes, they're ready to tackle the impossible in the workplace.

my pet, Peavis
this is todays announcement to the whole world:
LIFE IS SHORT
have fun
and
stop compromising yourself

And now, my pick for one of the suckiest human qualities: the inability to realize that everyone goes through shit and life is not easy for anyone. This includes taking other people's behavior personally, not being forthright, and wallowing in negative feelings rather than getting up and not wasting time and energy having feelings about things that aren't worth it.

lest anyone reading this takes it personally (oh, the irony), let it be known that this is not directed at one specific person, but rather, at many specific and non.
